Killer Angels: A Great Read!

As I start to work on my new Civil War period novel, I've begun to read other period pieces. I started with Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels. Within the first few pages, I found myself in the midst of the battle at Gettysburg. This is probably the best historical novel I have ever read. This is a must read for any history buff who wants to know how close the Union came to loosing the war.

I'll keep everyone up to date with the progress on this knew book. I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches on The Lost Slab. I should have the release date soon. In the meantime...

Alice of Old Vincennes

I just finished reading Alice of Old Vinceness and actually enjoyed the book. I had avoided it for years due to the fact I always thought it was a chick's romance. In actuality it painted a picture that I had never known about French Vincennes. I have read several books about George Rogers Clark and only now truly understand the seige of Fort Sackville. (lots of action and killing with a little bit of romance) I recommend the book strongly to anyone who enjoys history.

Only the ghosts and memories are left...Flat Rock Grade School (RIP)

After several years of letting my old alma mater fall in on itself, The Flat Rock Grade School is being torn down. It was fitting that it was a cold rainy day went I went to say goodbye. From August 1964 to May 1974 it was my home away from home. It was the hub and lifeblood of the community and things haven't been the same since it closed in 1986. So for one last time... Here goes nothing (sic)

Abraham Lincoln's Home in Springfield

After my annual trip to Springfield to pay what was due to Caesar, we stopped by Abraham Lincoln's Home . It is completely restored with some original furnishings. It's quite impressive to say the least. You get the feeling that you're standing on hallowed ground. When you use the handrail to go upstairs in the house, you're place your hand on the same piece of wood as Lincoln. You can see the tiny desk in the corner of his bedroom and picture him working late into the night. You can see the table and exact spot where he sat when he learned that he had just won the Republican Party's nomination for the presidency. The tour was completely free. I highly recommended stopping by if you get the chance.

This restored house that sits across the street from the Lincoln House, belonged to Jesse K. Dubois. He was state auditor and Lincoln's close friend. Those of you who read The Hanging of Betsey Reed might remember Dubois as the owner of the Dubois Tavern in Palestine. He used his friendship with Lincoln to launch his own political career.
