Uncle Earl

As you go through life, there are certain people who make you feel special. My Uncle Earl was one of those people. For as far back as my memory takes me, he was there with open arms. Birthdays, Christmas or a cookout at the pond—it didn’t matter what the occasion was—he always seemed interested in what I had to say and made me feel like I mattered. He always had time for my brothers and I as we were growing up. More than that—he was fun. Boy—was he fun! His childlike enthusiasm was contagious and he seemed as eager as us kids to play a game of baseball, shoot baskets or go fishing. Looking back at my childhood, many of my absolute best memories has Uncle Earl playing a leading role. From watching home movies (which always ended with a Donald duck cartoon) to midnight soccer games or fishing along the North Fork or at the pond on our farm. He made every adventure fun.

I remember walking through the woods with Uncle Earl and we came up on a giant cotton mouth water moccasin. I had no idea a grown up could run so fast. We teased him endlessly about it but he didn’t mind. It was a good day.

He pulled our sleds behind his truck and took us camping and was a good sport about whatever schemes we kids might happen to cook up. He was always a willing participant to a fault. This actually led to a couple of late night visits to the emergency room. He is still the only person I have ever known who had to go to the doctor because of being attacked by a catfish. In a way, Uncle Earl made us feel like grown-ups by treating us as adults while acting like a kid.

My favorite memory of Uncle Earl was the time after the nationally televised race in Terre Haute, when I looked out on the raceway and saw him speeding around the Action Track in his shinny, black, 1969 Thunderbird. To make matters worse (or in this case—better) both Nana Gin and Grandma Peg were in the back seat whoopin’ and a hollerin’ like they were in a Dukes of Hazard episode. I can only imagine the conversation that took place before that joy ride. He was swerving around road graders and tractors with reckless abandon, as track officials yelled for him to get off of the track. He, of course ignored them and went faster. He threw the door open when he reached the front stretch, so us kids could jump in with them too. He was like the getaway driver at a bank robbery, Uncle Earl drove 3 more laps with the skill of A.J Foyt before leaving the track—victorious. That was the only time in my life that I ever saw any mud on one of his cars.

I never saw Uncle Earl speak with malice toward anyone. He liked everyone and everyone seemed to like him back. Besides leaving me with countless wonderful memories, he was hero and role model for my brothers and I. Earl Cornell was more than a good man, as far as I’m concerned—he was great. He was like my second father.

I miss him so much. But because of the time he made for me when I was young, all I have to do is close my eyes and he’s standing next to me with a fishing pole in his hand and a smile on his face. And then the world seems to be okay once again.

A HERD OF COWS - A FLOCK OF CHICKENS

The English language has some wonderfully anthropomorphic collective nouns for the various groups of animals.

We are all familiar with a Herd of cows, a Flock of chickens, a School of fish and a Gaggle of geese.

However, less widely known is a Pride of lions, a Murder of crows (as well as their cousins the rooks and ravens), an Exaltation of doves and, presumably because they look so wise, a Parliament of owls.

Now consider a group of Baboons. They are the loudest, most dangerous, most obnoxious, most viciously aggressive and least intelligent of all primates. And what is the proper collective noun for a group of baboons?

Irene Sendler

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an 'ulterior motive'. As a German she KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews.

Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids).

She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family.

Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was not selected.

President Obama won one year before becoming President for his work as a community organizer for ACORN

and Al Gore won also --- for a slide show on Global Warming.

Race fans may not have heard of Sloan Henderson yet, but that is about to change.
Due to the global impact and success of Danica Patrick, national racing teams and corporate sponsors are frantically scouring the country in search of the next dynamic female racer. With potentially millions of dollars on the line, the driver must have a dynamic personality, a wholesome image that Madison Avenue can promote and most importantly, a lead foot and the ability to take the checkered flag ahead of the boys.
From all indications, eighteen year old NASCAR phenom, Sloan Henderson, meets the criteria and is poised and ready to drive herself into the national spotlight. After only two years in the NASCAR Whelen Late Model Series, Sloan has made enough noise in the racing world forBleacherReport.com to name her one of the top twelve up and coming female drivers on the planet.
During the 2010 racing season, Sloan drove to victory lane on two occasions and had 16 top five finishes in only 22 starts. Her on-track performance was enough to earn her the 2010 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Rookie of the Year Award. All this success has put the Franklin, Ohio native on a fast-track to rise through the racing divisions and has set her sights on moving into NASCAR’s elite divisions in the not too distant future.
Sloan’s racing career began at the age of twelve after she suffered a broken jaw while riding a horse. In a move that will leave some people scratching their heads; Sloan’s father decided that horseback riding was too dangerous of an activity and suggested she try her hand at racing. Sloan jumped into a quarter midget and in her first year won over fifty races including The Eastern Grand Nationals. She was also named Quarter Midget Rookie of the year. From 2005 to 2008 Sloan worked her way through the Bandoleros and Legend Car divisions, winning dozens of races and awards along the way. In 2009 when she jumped behind the wheel of a stock car for the first time, it immediately became obvious that Sloan Henderson was something special. Within a year, Sloan was not only competitive, she was winning races.
Sloan describes her driving style as aggressive, but clean. “I try to live my life in a way that hopefully will make people respect me. It takes a lot of trust to race side by side and for the most part, I haven’t had many problems on the track. Once in a while a driver will think than he can push me around because I’m a girl. In those situations, I’m not opposed to putting them into the wall.”
As good as Sloan Henderson is on the track, her off track persona is even more impressive. She’s open and up front about her faith. “My father and I pray before every race. This doesn’t mean we’re perfect. It means we know what direction we’re all heading. You may see us get mad at times and even do something we shouldn’t. But after we cool off and the cameras stop rolling, we will ask for forgiveness. We believe that winning at life is as important as winning on the track.”
Sloan just graduated from Dayton Christian High School where she was active with the “Worth Waiting For” program. She also is actively involved the “Make A Wish Foundation. She chose the charity because they had helped two of her cousins in the past and wanted to give something back on their behalf. Last year Sloan traveled to Cleveland to grant a wish for a young boy. She is also involved in “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” and the “Lyn St. James’ Women in the Winner Circle Foundation.”
Sloan is a fan favorite wherever she races, but her popularity isn’t restricted to the track. Her home town of Franklin, Ohio has honored her with a “Sloan Henderson Day” and chose her to be the Grand Marshall at the city’s July 4th parade. Sloan was also given the honor of rededicating a local historical bridge. She does a weekly update for a local radio station and co writes a weekly column that appears in five local newspapers. Sloan takes her local celebrity status in stride. “My friends in high school treat me like anyone else. The only difference is that they spent their senior year preparing for college and I spent mine preparing for NASCAR.
In January Sloan was busy testing a stock car for the upcoming ARCA season at Daytona International Speedway. Besides piloting her stock car at over 180 mph around the famed two and a half mile tri-oval, she also was given the opportunity to test for Grand-Am road racing’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.
“I’ve been driving ovals my entire career, so I felt right at home at Daytona once I got used to the steep banking in the turns. It was really easier than driving a bad-handling stock car on a short track. I was really excited about the opportunity to drive the road course at Daytona too. I’m so thankful for the chance that NASCAR and Continental Tire have given me to drive in Grand-Am.”
“NASCAR’s had its eye on Sloan for the past few years, explained Compass 360 Racing Team Principal, Karl Thomson. “She’s got amazing raw talent, having progressed to (NASCAR) Whelen within a few short years. She’s also got tremendous marketability and has the potential for a bright future in motor sports. The test was a chance for her to drive a very different kind of car at a very different kind of venue.”
Sloan realizes that with her All-American good looks and early success on the race track, she will be constantly compared to Danica Patrick. “I don’t mind the comparisons,” Sloan admitted. Danica has had some success on the track and has given Go-Daddy.Com worldwide recognition. She really knows how to market herself. I feel that I can make any sponsor’s product a household name too. Don’t get me wrong, Danica, along with Sarah Fisher and Lyn St. James have opened a door and given me a chance to succeed in racing. The only difference is that I won’t be happy with just being competitive. I intend to win.”
Sloan had intended to race the entire ARCA schedule this season before moving up to the elite NASCAR divisions, but when a sponsor backed out due to the poor economy, it forced her to refocus and regroup until a new sponsor comes on board. In the meantime Sloan will race a limited ARCA and USAR Pro Cup Series. “I’m not worried,” Sloan declared. “I have faith in God and believe in the talent he has given me. Things will turn out the way they’re supposed be.”
Sloan is poised to become the next racing sensation in NASCAR. Drivers should be forewarned about being fooled by her disarming smile or her girl next door looks. She wants to win and won’t settle for second place.
Don’t be surprised in few years when you hear the race teams have started to look for the next Sloan Henderson.

Most of the old time entertainers were made
out of a lot sterner stuff than today's crop of activists and whiners.

It was just before Thanksgiving '67 and we were ferrying dead and wounded
from a large GRF west of Pleiku , Vietnam .
We had run out of body bags by noon, so the Hook (CH-47 CHINOOK)
was pretty rough in the back.
All of a sudden, we heard a 'take-charge' woman's voice in the rear.

There was the singer and actress, Martha Raye, with a SF (Special Forces)
beret and jungle fatigues, with subdued markings, helping the wounded into the Chinook,
and carrying the dead aboard. 'Maggie' had been visiting her SF 'heroes' out 'west'.

We took off, short of fuel, and headed to the USAF hospital pad at Pleiku.
As we all started unloading, our Captain said to Martha.
... Ms Ray, with all these dead and wounded to process, there would not be time for your show!

To all of our surprise, she pulled on her right collar and said.....Captain, see this eagle?
I am a full 'Bird' Colonel in the US Army Reserve, and on this is a 'Caduse' which means
I am a Nurse, with a surgical specialty....now, take me to your wounded.
He said, yes ma'am.... Follow me.

Several times at the Army Field Hospital in Pleiku, she would 'cover' a surgical shift,
giving a nurse a well-deserved break.

Martha is the only woman buried in the SF (Special Forces) cemetery at Ft. Bragg ..

Boxing was the subject for the night as former Heavyweight Champ Buster Douglas and "The Lady of the Ring" Amy Hayes, visited with the Sports Life Crew on Tuesday Night. Buster appeared along with his long time manager John Johnson and discussed Buster's return to the fight game. Buster is tutoring a a young heavyweight from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio as he works his way up the ranks.

Move over Michael Buffer. It’s taken 18 years for Amy Hayes to go from ring girl in Detroit to one of the most recognizable ring announcers in the boxing world and she’s not about to stop now. “The Lady of the Ring,” who travels the globe to announce top tier and championship fights has a heartfelt passion for the sport of boxing. “Boxing is still popular outside of the United States. I’ve announced fights in Europe, Asia and Central American and the arenas are drawing record crowds. I know boxing has seen a decline in popularity in America but I convinced it will come back when the right fighter comes along. Boxing will be around forever. I don’t care if the economy is sluggish or what critics say. I am going to work as hard as I can at every fight I announce to bring the sport back to where it needs to be.

It hasn’t been easy for Amy to break into the all-boys club. “I was in LA at the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Shane Mosley fight at the Staples Center. I was scheduled to announce two fights and was in my dressing room when a staff member said that Michael Buffer was refusing to call his scheduled bouts if I stepped into the ring. After the fight his brother, (Bruce Buffer) called me and said that the incident never happened. Michael would be happy to have me work his undercards! I thought it was a bit funny as I had a television series of my own at the time and had just finished my celebrity Playboy pictorial. I wasn't doing undercards beneath other announcers. The Civil War in Illinois

I read this novel as research for the new book and found it portrays a candid look at the life at home in the Civil War. Not only was the country divided, but so was southern Illinois to say the least. A majority of the locals of "Little Egypt sympathized with the south. Many wanted to succeed from the union completely. I recommend The River Between Us by Richard Peck as a good read.

You may have heard on the news about a southern California man that was put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found that he owned 100 guns and allegedly had (by rough estimate) 1 million rounds of ammunition stored in his home. The house also featured a secret escape tunnel.

My favorite quote from the dimwit television reporter: "Wow! He has .... about a million machine gun bullets." The headline referred to it as a "massive weapons cache." BTW, I am dubious about the pile of ammunition boxes and cans that they showed. It looked big enough to contain no more than about 100,000 rounds, unless there was a lot of .22 rimfire ammo.

However, by southern California standards, even someone owning 100,000 rounds would be called "mentally unstable. Just imagine if he lived elsewhere:

In Arizona, . .. . he'd be called "an avid gun collector."

In Texas, . .. . he'd be called "a novice gun collector."

In Utah, . .. .he'd be called "moderately well prepared," but they'd probably reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity of stored food.

In Montana, . .. .he'd be called "The neighborhood 'Go-To' guy."

In Idaho, . . . he'd be called "a likely gubernatorial candidate."

And . . . in Wyoming, . . . he'd be called "an eligible bachelor."

A good Civil War read

While doing research for the new book, I found Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. The book centers around a family and ten year old boy in Jasper County, Illinois during the Civil War. In the beginning of the story, Jethro Creighton lives on an Illinois farm just before the war. He has always been a hard worker, and he is busily tending his family's farm. However, when his schoolmaster and good friend, Shadrach Yale, returns from town with the news that the war has begun, Jethro’s world is turned upside-down. The novel is classified as a young adult, but I would highly recommend it to any Civil War buff; especially anyone from downstate Illinois.

As I start to work on my new Civil War period novel, I've begun to read other period pieces. I started with Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels. Within the first few pages, I found myself in the midst of the battle at Gettysburg. This is probably the best historical novel I have ever read. This is a must read for any history buff who wants to know how close the Union came to loosing the war.

I'll keep everyone up to date with the progress on this knew book. I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches on The Lost Slab. I should have the release date soon. In the meantime...
